Près d’un mois après son arrestation en Turquie, le photojournaliste Mathias Depardon a été renvoyé dans son pays.
Le photojournaliste français Mathias Depardon, arrêté pendant un reportage dans le sud-est de la Turquie où il a été détenu un mois, était en route vendredi pour Istanbul d’où il sera expulsé vers la France, a indiqué Reporters sans frontières (RSF).
Cette expulsion survient au lendemain d’une visite de la mère de M. Depardon dans le centre de rétention de Gaziantep où il était détenu depuis un mois.
Le président français Emmanuel Macron avait demandé le 3 juin à son homologue turc Recep Tayyip Erdogan le retour en France « le plus vite possible » de Mathias Depardon.
Ses avocats avaient par ailleurs réclamé vendredi une intervention de la Commission européenne pour mettre fin à la « détention arbitraire » du photojournaliste français.
Installé en Turquie depuis cinq ans, M. Depardon, un journaliste indépendant âgé de 37 ans, a été arrêté à Hasankeyf (sud-est), où il réalisait un reportage pour le magazine National Geographic.
Son avion s’est posé peu après 22h00 à l’aéroport parisien de Roissy où il a été accueilli par le directeur de cabinet et par le conseiller diplomatique du président français Emmanuel Macron, a précisé le secrétaire général de RSF, Christian Deloire. Il devait ensuite s’exprimer devant la presse.
Le photojournaliste a pris un avion à Gaziantep, où il était détenu, pour rejoindre Istanbul, d’où il s’est ensuite envolé pour la France.
Dès son arrivée, Mathias Depardon s’est entretenu par téléphone avec Emmanuel Macron. «Je suis très heureux de vous annoncer le retour en France dès ce soir de notre compatriote photojournaliste @mathiasdepardon», avait écrit le président français dans la soirée sur Twitter.

Il faisait l’objet d’un ordre d’expulsion depuis le 11 mai mais était détenu à Gaziantep par les autorités turques, qui le soupçonnent d’avoir fait de la «propagande terroriste» en faveur de la guérilla kurde, pour avoir diffusé sur les réseaux sociaux des photos prises au cours d’un reportage sur le Parti des travailleurs du Kurdistan (PKK, séparatistes kurdes).
A son arrivée en France, Mathias Depardon a été accueilli par le directeur de cabinet de la présidence, Patrick Strzoda, et par le conseiller diplomatique Philippe Etienne.
Sur Internet, notamment parmi ses confrères français, une mobilisation avait été déclenchée en faveur de la libération du photojournaliste, avec sur Twitter le mot-dièse #FreeMathias.
Mathias Depardon est le dernier d’une série de journalistes européens arrêtés ou expulsés par les autorités en Turquie, où les conditions de travail se sont dégradées au cours des derniers mois pour les professionnels des médias, en particulier depuis le putsch manqué de juillet 2016.
Olivier Bertrand, un journaliste français, et Gabriele Del Grande, un journaliste italien, ont été arrêtés et expulsés ces derniers mois.
Un journaliste germano-turc, Deniz Yücel, est quant à lui accusé d’«espionnage» et d’activités «terroristes» et a été incarcéré.
Les organisations de défense de la liberté de la presse dénoncent des atteintes régulières à cette liberté de la part des autorités turques, notamment depuis la tentative de coup d’Etat du 15 juillet 2016.
Plus de 100 journalistes turcs sont actuellement incarcérés en Turquie, et le gouvernement cible parfois les correspondants étrangers.
Le chef de la diplomatie turque Mevlüt Cavusoglu a provoqué un tollé en déclarant cette semaine que des services de renseignement européens utilisaient des journalistes pour espionner la Turquie.
Ce pays occupe la 155e place sur 180 au classement 2017 de la liberté de la presse établi par RSF.
